A billboard just a block from my house advertised CoolSculpting for a while. I passed it all the time, and every time I thought about how “cool” it would be if someone could freeze and disappear a whole big bunch of my fat cells in no time.

I had no idea if it worked. I am too chicken and too skeptical to try it. But a girl can fantasize fab thighs. I’d imagine how I’d look, and I’d promise myself that if my fat cells ever could vanish, I would be so careful for the rest of my life that fat would never again be an issue.

And then the ad was replaced, and I didn’t give CoolSculpting much more thought.

Until now. Until the stories about Linda Evangelista’s experience with the procedure. And now I think about it all the time.

One of the most beautiful women in the world, she was an original supermodel, a woman whose appearance seemed to give her entree to anything she wanted and a salary well beyond most people’s; she reputedly once said she never gets out of bed for less than $10,000 a day. She has been on hundreds of magazine covers.

Given that, I feel sad that such a woman could feel compelled to undergo a procedure to change her looks, to try to turn back time. I’m not necessarily surprised; I know cosmetic procedures are not uncommon among…
